This second workshop of the Ocean Governance Incubator Project shifts the focus to maritime space within national jurisdiction. It looks at political and military challenges in the territorial sea, exclusive economic zone, and continental shelf. The event will take place on Wednesday, 16 September, from 13:15–17:15 in Utrecht.
The workshop singles out three case studies (warfare and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, hybrid threats against seabed infrastructure, and Russia’s shadow fleet) to answer these broader questions:
- How and why is international order challenged at sea?
- What are the (possible) military, sociopolitical, legal, and/or ecological consequences of these challenges?
- What legal and other tools do we currently have to deal with these challenges?
- What additional legal and other tools could be developed, and how might these affect the current ocean order?
